Hmmmm. Acceptance for some. Rejection for most. How could you work there? Its definitely wasnt the first (or, unfortunately, the last) time that I would have such a reaction when I informed people about what I do for a living. And yes, turning down applications is a huge part of the job. However, when I think of the colleagues I work with on a daily basis, none of us particularly enjoy the rejection part of our job. And none of us are the evil, cynical monsters I think were sometimes thought of as. So, I thought itd be helpful to tell you all a bit about how I got to MIT and answer how I could possibly work here. I had a guidance counselor at school, but with over 300 students on her caseload and no one specializing in college applications, I was pretty much on my own. I only went on two college tours and thought I had to apply Early Decision to the second school I toured; thats where I ended up, even though the financial aid package offered was unaffordable for my family. During my time in undergrad, the Admissions Office became a second home for me on-campus. My supervisors, amazing women of color who came from similar backgrounds as myself, helped me when I struggled with the racial climate of my school or family pressures. When my dad lost his job halfway through my undergrad experience, these mentors helped me figure out a way to graduate a year early because I couldnt afford to attend school any longer. When I started looking for jobs, I ended up working as a College Access Counselor at a community-based organization called Bottom Line because I wanted to continue to help first-generation students through the college application process and think about financial planning. After counseling two cohorts of students (yes, that means I completed over 120 FAFSAs over 2 years I feel your pain), I became increasingly interested in the college process. Why were some of the students I loved not being admitted to their favorite schools, and why were other students being admitted when I didnt think those schools would give them a chance? There would be only one way to find out so I threw my application into the running and here I am at MIT. Yes, selection is a huge part of our jobs and takes over our entire lives for many months out of the year. However, my goal when reading an application is never to just find a reason to deny. My goal is to hear your stories, learn about your dreams and aspirations, and read the amazing things your teachers and counselors have to say about you. When we move through the committee process, our goal is to look at all components of your application and try to holistically understand the world you come from and how you navigate that world. We get emotionally attached to applications, even though we know we shouldnt, and lose sleep over students whose stories impact us (and sometimes, because of our committee-based process, those students dont get in). Additionally, there is so much more to my job than selection. We get to present information sessions both here in Cambridge and on the road to share accurate information about applying to our institution, we give your counselors and teachers advice about their recommendations for you, and some of us even write blog posts to inform you about what were thinking! I also love supervising our student employees because I hope to be a resource to them as someone who has navigated college as a first-gen, Black and Puerto Rican, queer student. I dont view my job as denying people I view my job as advocating for students in our admissions process. I relay information to prospective students to alleviate their stress and guide them on a successful path to admission. I sweat, bleed (paper cuts are REAL!), and cry at work not because I love being mean and denying people, but because I dont want any of you to make the same mistakes I did going through my college application process and I want to make sure we are making ethical decisions as we select our incoming class. Does any of this make getting rejected from MIT any easier? Probably not. But when you meet us on-campus, on the road (over the next several months, Ill be in Philadelphia, NYC, St. Louis, and many places in between), or over the phone, know that we are here to help you. In fact, thats why I got into this line of work! Many of us were once just as confused about college as you might be now, and most of us just want to make the process less daunting for you (at least, as much as we can). And know that we are not hired to be dream destroyers were hired to make MITs application more accessible, to find new and innovative ways to communicate our mission, and to support students once theyre on our campus.

Myths Revealed Smoking Kills and the Western Myth is No More! - Literature Essay Samples
Although smoking of the past was viewed as glamorous and romantic, its cancerous, harmful effects are now a common fact. Similarly, in Cormac McCarthyââ¬â¢s novel All the Pretty Horses, the consistent smoking throughout the novel juxtaposes the negative effect of smoking with a naà ¯ve faith in the American western myth. The recurring motif of smoking in the novel serves to portray both the romanticism behind blind faith in the Western myth and the stark realities of its modern failure. In the relentless motifs of smoking, itââ¬â¢s hard to deny that smoking has a deeper, symbolic meaning in All the Pretty Horses. The friendly dialogues and clichà © beginnings that take place while smoking express the poignant communion between characters before the disappointment of the western myth is discovered. John Grady and his father meet in a cafà © where they hardly talk; during this awkward dinner, his father feels as though he has failed his son. Throughout this first scene where t he characters smoke, John Gradyââ¬â¢s father ââ¬Å"got another cigarette and tapped it against the lighter,â⬠and as Grady contemplates about his future ââ¬Å"his father smoked.â⬠This father/son conversation conveys the intimate rapport of characters before the demise of the myth. Furthermore, before Rawlins and Grady run off to Mexico, the two share a man to man communion (while smoking): Rawlins ââ¬Å"took a cigarette outâ⬠and ââ¬Å"sat smoking.â⬠As he ââ¬Å"tipped the ash from the end of the cigarette,â⬠Rawlins claims that women ââ¬Å"aint worth it. None of em are.â⬠The empathy between John Grady and a close friend or relative while smoking emphasizes the idealized vision of the west. Just as smoking is fascinating to youthful users, the clichà ©d idea of the west is also. In this clichà © beginning of the novel, John Grady and Rawlins experience no danger or violence on their journey to Mexico; their harmless trip to Mexico follows t he boysââ¬â¢ naà ¯ve perception of the western myth. This perception of the myth similarly follows smokingââ¬âthe intriguing experience of smoking seems harmless at first. As Rawlins absorb his newfound life in the west, he ââ¬Å"rolled a cigarette and lit it.â⬠Here, in another communion with John Grady, he claims that he ââ¬Å"could get used to this life.â⬠He delicately tapped the ash, saying it ââ¬Å"wouldnââ¬â¢t take [him] no time at all.â⬠This furthermore emphasizes the childish view of Rawlins and Gradyââ¬âjust as they believe smoking is a harmless habit, they believe this idealized view of the West will be as they expected. As John Grady and Rawlins face the gory reality of the American west, the fate of smoking is also recognized. The death of John Gradyââ¬â¢s father and the violent, threatening scenes convey the degradation of the myth of the west. Although smoking began as an enthralling communion between characters, it soon becomes a brutally silent killerâ⬠¦or a near killer. Just as ââ¬Å"the boy stubbed out the cigarette,â⬠the violent fight scene erupts in the jail where John Grady is almost killed. The relationships with cigarettes have drastically changed from the beginning of the questââ¬âno longer are characters in deep conversations while smoking; they now are facing the violent reality of the western myth. Perhaps the most painful reality of smoking was portrayed by the death of his father. This death symbolizes not only the reality of smoking, but also a death of childish view of the west. Although it is not made explicit, it can be inferred that John Gradyââ¬â¢s father dies from lung cancer, as he was heavy smoker. His father and grandfather were an embodiment of the former, idealized vision of the west. John Grady clearly has some spiritual connection with these relatives, as he ââ¬Å"knew his father was deadâ⬠when he awoke one morning. Although John Grady may realize that t he romanticized myth is coming to an end, he still maintains his faith. As the myth of the American West deteriorates in the eyes of some of the characters throughout the novel, smoking likewise becomes a hopeless habit, emphasizing the slow weakening of the faith in the American West. Yet, John Grady remains steadfast to his belief of the American westââ¬âhe refuses to accept modernization. At the beginning of their quest, both John Grady and Rawlins have an ultimate belief in their future as cowboys. As their plans turn another direction, however, Rawlins becomes extremely cynical about this idealized dream. His doubt in the American west correlates with cigarettes. As the boys return to Encantada, a recent memory, as prisoners: ââ¬Å"John Grady called to ask [the children] if they could get them cigarettes.â⬠The skeptical Rawlins, however, spits and claims ââ¬Å"they aint goin to bring you no damn cigarette,â⬠expressing his loss of faith in the western dream. T he shy children do in fact bring the cigarettes for John Grady, giving him some hope that the dream of the American cowboy may survive. Another important dialogue that concretely grounds John Gradyââ¬â¢s faith is when he discusses the breeding of the Andalusian horses. Even more, John Grady is smoking while discussing this future. As he ââ¬Å"tips the ash from his cigarette,â⬠the hacendado asks John Grady if he knows what ââ¬Å"a criollo is.â⬠The criollo happens to be an Andalusian horse, which John Grady later breeds with the western mares. The breeding of these specific horses corresponds to the ââ¬Å"picturebook horsesâ⬠that his grandfather dismissed as a child. John Grady noticed that these animals were like none he had ever seen; they had good, heavy hindquarters, ââ¬Å"enough to make a cuttinghorse,â⬠which is another emphasis on the fantasy of these ââ¬Å"picturebook horses.â⬠These horses, which perhaps symbolize the idyllic, yet unreal, w est in the eyes of the grandfather, represent an attainable reality to young John Grady. The smoking during this important scene, which paints his envision of the west, portrays John Gradyââ¬â¢s faith in his dreamââ¬âhe will do anything to fulfill it. Furthermore, when John Grady is in the last prison, Pà ©rez tells him of connections to get him out of prison. When Pà ©rez offers John Grady a cigarette, he ââ¬Å"stubbed it out in the tin ashtray â⬠¦Cigarettes in that world were money themselves and the one he left broken and smoldering in front of his host had hardly been smoked at all.â⬠This denial of Pà ©rezââ¬â¢s money portrays John Gradyââ¬â¢s similar denial of the modernization of the Westââ¬âhe still believes in the idealized West. The common smoking scenes of All the Pretty Horses, whether they are of man to man communion or display the violence of the West, convey the dying dream of the American west. This idealized trope, although intriguing at first, eventually has a fatal, negative effect, just as smoking. So, beware, fascinating dreams can lead to death!
