Your Friendly Neighborhood Dream-Destroyer It was 8:00pm on a Thursday night when I received a text message from a buddy who wanted to hang out. Since I was a college admissions officer in the month of April, naturally, I was at still at work. I was helping coordinate the opening show for our Campus Preview Weekend a super fun and exciting event where all admitted students who come to campus get together for the first time. The Logarhythms were preparing for soundcheck and Mocha Moves, one of our amazing hip hop dance groups, were practicing their choreography on-stage when I responded to my friend: Me: Hey! Im just organizing this big event at work right now. Him: Ohhh. A big rejection party? Me: Were actually celebrating the students who were accepted and trying to help them build community! Him: Lol. Hmmmm. Acceptance for some. Rejection for most. How could you work there? Its definitely wasnt the first (or, unfortunately, the last) time that I would have such a reaction when I informed people about what I do for a living. And yes, turning down applications is a huge part of the job. However, when I think of the colleagues I work with on a daily basis, none of us particularly enjoy the rejection part of our job. And none of us are the evil, cynical monsters I think were sometimes thought of as. So, I thought itd be helpful to tell you all a bit about how I got to MIT and answer how I could possibly work here. If we rewind to when I was in high school (a much simpler time when Tyra Banks was the only host of Americas Next Top Model and RuPaul hadnt purchased HD cameras yet so her entire show was filmed with a vaseline-like filter), I was quite confused during my own college application process. Although my parents were incredibly supportive of my dreams and aspirations, neither had attended college themselves and couldnt be as helpful as they wanted to be when it came to making a college list or completing an application. I had a guidance counselor at school, but with over 300 students on her caseload and no one specializing in college applications, I was pretty much on my own. I only went on two college tours and thought I had to apply Early Decision to the second school I toured; thats where I ended up, even though the financial aid package offered was unaffordable for my family. During my time in undergrad, the Admissions Office became a second home for me on-campus. My supervisors, amazing women of color who came from similar backgrounds as myself, helped me when I struggled with the racial climate of my school or family pressures. When my dad lost his job halfway through my undergrad experience, these mentors helped me figure out a way to graduate a year early because I couldnt afford to attend school any longer. When I started looking for jobs, I ended up working as a College Access Counselor at a community-based organization called Bottom Line because I wanted to continue to help first-generation students through the college application process and think about financial planning. After counseling two cohorts of students (yes, that means I completed over 120 FAFSAs over 2 years I feel your pain), I became increasingly interested in the college process. Why were some of the students I loved not being admitted to their favorite schools, and why were other students being admitted when I didnt think those schools would give them a chance? There would be only one way to find out so I threw my application into the running and here I am at MIT. Yes, selection is a huge part of our jobs and takes over our entire lives for many months out of the year. However, my goal when reading an application is never to just find a reason to deny. My goal is to hear your stories, learn about your dreams and aspirations, and read the amazing things your teachers and counselors have to say about you. When we move through the committee process, our goal is to look at all components of your application and try to holistically understand the world you come from and how you navigate that world. We get emotionally attached to applications, even though we know we shouldnt, and lose sleep over students whose stories impact us (and sometimes, because of our committee-based process, those students dont get in). Additionally, there is so much more to my job than selection. We get to present information sessions both here in Cambridge and on the road to share accurate information about applying to our institution, we give your counselors and teachers advice about their recommendations for you, and some of us even write blog posts to inform you about what were thinking! I also love supervising our student employees because I hope to be a resource to them as someone who has navigated college as a first-gen, Black and Puerto Rican, queer student. I dont view my job as denying people I view my job as advocating for students in our admissions process. I relay information to prospective students to alleviate their stress and guide them on a successful path to admission. I sweat, bleed (paper cuts are REAL!), and cry at work not because I love being mean and denying people, but because I dont want any of you to make the same mistakes I did going through my college application process and I want to make sure we are making ethical decisions as we select our incoming class. Does any of this make getting rejected from MIT any easier? Probably not. But when you meet us on-campus, on the road (over the next several months, Ill be in Philadelphia, NYC, St. Louis, and many places in between), or over the phone, know that we are here to help you. In fact, thats why I got into this line of work! Many of us were once just as confused about college as you might be now, and most of us just want to make the process less daunting for you (at least, as much as we can). And know that we are not hired to be dream destroyers were hired to make MITs application more accessible, to find new and innovative ways to communicate our mission, and to support students once theyre on our campus.

Although smoking began as an enthralling communion between characters, it soon becomes a brutally silent killerÃ¢â‚¬ ¦or a near killer. Just as Ã¢â‚¬Å"the boy stubbed out the cigarette,Ã¢â‚¬ the violent fight scene erupts in the jail where John Grady is almost killed. The relationships with cigarettes have drastically changed from the beginning of the questÃ¢â‚¬â€no longer are characters in deep conversations while smoking; they now are facing the violent reality of the western myth. Perhaps the most painful reality of smoking was portrayed by the death of his father. This death symbolizes not only the reality of smoking, but also a death of childish view of the west. Although it is not made explicit, it can be inferred that John GradyÃ¢â‚¬â„¢s father dies from lung cancer, as he was heavy smoker. His father and grandfather were an embodiment of the former, idealized vision of the west. John Grady clearly has some spiritual connection with these relatives, as he Ã¢â‚¬Å"knew his father was deadÃ¢â‚¬ when he awoke one morning. Although John Grady may realize that t he romanticized myth is coming to an end, he still maintains his faith. As the myth of the American West deteriorates in the eyes of some of the characters throughout the novel, smoking likewise becomes a hopeless habit, emphasizing the slow weakening of the faith in the American West. Yet, John Grady remains steadfast to his belief of the American westÃ¢â‚¬â€he refuses to accept modernization. At the beginning of their quest, both John Grady and Rawlins have an ultimate belief in their future as cowboys. As their plans turn another direction, however, Rawlins becomes extremely cynical about this idealized dream. His doubt in the American west correlates with cigarettes. As the boys return to Encantada, a recent memory, as prisoners: Ã¢â‚¬Å"John Grady called to ask [the children] if they could get them cigarettes.Ã¢â‚¬ The skeptical Rawlins, however, spits and claims Ã¢â‚¬Å"they aint goin to bring you no damn cigarette,Ã¢â‚¬ expressing his loss of faith in the western dream. T he shy children do in fact bring the cigarettes for John Grady, giving him some hope that the dream of the American cowboy may survive. Another important dialogue that concretely grounds John GradyÃ¢â‚¬â„¢s faith is when he discusses the breeding of the Andalusian horses. Even more, John Grady is smoking while discussing this future. As he Ã¢â‚¬Å"tips the ash from his cigarette,Ã¢â‚¬ the hacendado asks John Grady if he knows what Ã¢â‚¬Å"a criollo is.Ã¢â‚¬ The criollo happens to be an Andalusian horse, which John Grady later breeds with the western mares. The breeding of these specific horses corresponds to the Ã¢â‚¬Å"picturebook horsesÃ¢â‚¬ that his grandfather dismissed as a child. John Grady noticed that these animals were like none he had ever seen; they had good, heavy hindquarters, Ã¢â‚¬Å"enough to make a cuttinghorse,Ã¢â‚¬ which is another emphasis on the fantasy of these Ã¢â‚¬Å"picturebook horses.Ã¢â‚¬ These horses, which perhaps symbolize the idyllic, yet unreal, w est in the eyes of the grandfather, represent an attainable reality to young John Grady. The smoking during this important scene, which paints his envision of the west, portrays John GradyÃ¢â‚¬â„¢s faith in his dreamÃ¢â‚¬â€he will do anything to fulfill it. Furthermore, when John Grady is in the last prison, PÃƒ ©rez tells him of connections to get him out of prison. When PÃƒ ©rez offers John Grady a cigarette, he Ã¢â‚¬Å"stubbed it out in the tin ashtray Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Cigarettes in that world were money themselves and the one he left broken and smoldering in front of his host had hardly been smoked at all.Ã¢â‚¬ This denial of PÃƒ ©rezÃ¢â‚¬â„¢s money portrays John GradyÃ¢â‚¬â„¢s similar denial of the modernization of the WestÃ¢â‚¬â€he still believes in the idealized West. Poe and Perkins Unreliable Narrators Edgar Allan Poe and Charlotte Perkins were two prominent American writers that explored the psychological constructs of the characters contained within their short stories. In The Tell-Tale Heart, by Poe, the unnamed narrator maintains that he is not mad despite the fact that he has murdered someone in the process of trying to destroy an Evil eye. The Era of Sleep Is Over Essay - 1416 Words

I have found a problem that should not be over looked. For many years students and teachers have had precious hours of sleep seized from them by schools all across the great United States of America. I am no attorney, but I do know seizure of property without a proper warrant is against the Fourth Amendment; one of the twenty seven amendments our very nation has been built upon today. I am not proposing we go to court with our school systems, but I am suggesting we can all comprise and find a few simple solutions to this unlawful problem we are all enduring. Therefore, high school start times should be pushed back to benefit students, teachers and our school systems. Students who attend high school may come across as slackers,Ã¢â‚¬ ¦show more contentÃ¢â‚¬ ¦I know schools have really been focusing on how bullying and suicides are related, but why they donÃ¢â‚¬â„¢t try to fix the depression, which could lead to suicide, that they are causing? Hence, at first, Dr. Francisco raised a question that whether higher education is good investment and for this, he did a periodic analysis in the World Bank about the economic return from education. Form his finding Dr. Francisco stated that higher education is a part of entire educational system and the economic returns is high. Hence, it is good to invest in higher education. However, there were some portions in the world, especially the Middle East and Northern Africa, where that economical return faced some challenges. Decreasing returns from higher education was the challenge that happened due to two potential reasons. The first reason was increasing supply of higher educated people that an economy could not utilise fully and second reason was decreasing demand for higher educated people due to lack of skills. In this context, Dr. Francisco gave an example of Angelo, who was the tourist guide in India but had the ability to become an economist. He also pointed out some other examples from rest of the world to highlight the negative economic returns of investment from higher education. Thus, it was important for him to indentify loopholes of educational system all over the world, as it is a global issue. In this context, Dr. Francisco told to think practically about those issues, as many jobs would be omitted in future for robots. Higher education is not only concerned about money or economic returns, but more than that. It helpes to develop a society by making citizenship, preparing new thinkers and building leaders for the society, which would lead everyone to think beyond traditional concepts of higher education. Hence, higher education is not only depending on money, rather it helpes to build a society with informed citizen, who further makes a developed community with more tolerance. However, in general, people did not think about those impacts of higher education and gave importance on investment of money from economic point of view. To analyse this view, Francisco took help of the World Development Report of the World Bank where he proved the social benefits of higher education. According to the report, among the total percentage of population, who believed on democracy, importance of democracy was greatly understood by those people, who had higher educational knowledge. According to other example, the ministry of Higher Education in South Africa informed that higher education was the last step of a formal educational system, where a country could get the opportunity to build a future generation with tolerance and awareness. To describe this situation, Francisco took the example of his own country, Mexico, where people got elementary education and for this reason, they could not adopt diversity due to lack of tolerance. Thus, higher education is not all about money rather it is the last resort for a country to provide for its future generation the capacity to understand other nations. The basic responsibility of a higher educational institute is to generate responsibilities among future generations about their own communities and for this those institutions needs to act as a role model. However, instead of those challenges, present and future environment is going to be very helpful for higher educational system but at the same time, it is important to face the challenges that how those transformations would affect higher education. The total number of enrolment for higher education is increasing significantly, all over the world. But there are some countries, especially low-income countries, where people get less benefits from higher income. Hence, for those underdeveloped countries, benefits received from economic point of view are more important than social benefits. Thus, it is important to break this discrepancy among countries to attain almost an equal global society. According to him, the government, higher educational institutions and people with higher education should take the responsibility to break that marginalisation. As higher education provides various facilities, it is a basic privilege for everyone. However, there are many poor countries, which cann ot access this privilege. Hence, it is the basic responsibility for all to decrease the gap between people, who are accessing higher education and who cannot get this opportunity. In this context, he took the suggestion of Stephan Kreisel that in 21st century, people could face a different society hence it was important to guide technologies to achieve better benefits. According to him, there were many people, who complained against higher educational institutions that those did not follow their role within a community, properly. However, there were various ways by which the improvement could be achieved. The Chief Financial Officer could therefore discuss and negotiate with the National Treasury and try and reach an agreement with regards to the potential amount of tax that has been avoided. The decision to pay back tax has been reached as the CEO has been forced and pressured into it. The CEO therefore needs to show the brands credentials and true business ethos, and prove that elements such as the mission statement arenÃ¢â‚¬â„¢t just hollow empty words. This could be done by investing in improving working conditions and the infrastructure in the less developed countries that provide the corporation with coffee beans. The investment could be calculated on a ratio basis: for every five million that is paid back in tax one million is invested into developing areas less privileged. This campaign will recover the brand name. The StarbucksÃ¢â‚¬â„¢ management team will then have to develop a communication plan that identifies the key stakeholders, their information needs and how these can be filled.
